Protesters tear down flag at Libya's embassy in Rome (Extra)
Feb 23, 2011, 16:30 GMT
Rome - Protesters on Wednesday tore down a Libyan flag outside the country's embassy in Rome and chanted slogans demanding the resignation of leader Moamer Gaddafi.
Scuffles broke out, with police attempting to block the demonstrators, but a group managed to climb over the gate and enter the embassy grounds.
They replaced the all-green flag with the red-black-and-green one used by the Libyan monarchy before the 1969 military coup that brought Gaddafi to power.
After more than three decades of Italian colonial rule, Libya gained independence in 1951 with Idris I as its king. The deposed monarch died in exile in Egypt in 1983.
