No sunbathing here - Greece swept by unusual snowstorms
Mar 8, 2011, 7:29 GMT
Athens - Forget bikinis and flip flops - holidaymakers longing for the sunny beaches of Greece were in for a surprise on Tuesday, as snowstorms hit large parts of the country.
Thousands of cars were trapped along the country's highways, and power lines were brought down on the Greek islands of Skiathos and Skopelos, as well as in many parts of northern Athens. Schools were also closed in many suburbs just north of the capital.
The snowstorms have come with a cold spell, pushing temperatures down to below freezing in central and western Greece.
Gale-force winds and rough seas have also forced ships to stay docked at ports across the country.
