Bosnian ex-general freed on bail in Austria
Mar 8, 2011, 16:00 GMT
Vienna - A former Bosnian general who was arrested in Austria on Serbian war crime charges was released Tuesday on bail of 500,000 euros (700,000 dollars), a court spokeswoman said.
Jovan Divjak's arrest on Thursday in Vienna was based on a Serbian warrant that accuses him of having commanded a 1992 attack on a former Yugoslav Army convoy in Sarajevo.
'He is not allowed to leave Austria,' said Christa Zemanek, a judge and spokeswoman at the Korneuburg court near Vienna where Divjak was being held. She added that he had to deposit his passport.
It will take at least a month before Austria decides on the extradition, she said.
Divjak is seen as a war hero by the Bosnian public because of his defence of Sarajevo against Serb forces during the Bosnian war.
The court's decision came one day after Austrian Foreign Minister Michael Spindelegger was reported as saying that Divjak's extradition would be 'unthinkable.'
