German airports check radiation levels on flights from Japan
Mar 17, 2011, 15:11 GMT
Frankfurt/Munich - Germany's largest airports, in Frankfurt and Munich, said Thursday they had launched radiation checks for flights out of Japan.
While Frankfurt airport officials said they had not detected any signs of increased radiation, Munich airport authorities said a slight increase in radiation had been recorded on the outer layer of an All Nippon Airways (ANA) aircraft from Japan on Wednesday.
The moves by the airports came in the wake of last week's devastating earthquake in north-east Japan which triggered a massive tsunami and resulted in a crisis at one of the nation's nuclear reactors.
Munich airport reported that checks in the cabin and cargo room of the ANA aircraft had not produced any concerns. The ANA aircraft was later cleared to make a return flight to Tokyo.
