Spain provides submarine, frigate, aircraft for Libya effort
Mar 19, 2011, 19:32 GMT
Paris/Madrid - Spain will provide six aircraft, a frigate and a submarine as part of the international effort to enforce a no- fly zone to protect the Libyan people, Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero said Saturday.
The announcement came at the end of the summit in Paris, hosted by Frenc President Nicolas Sarkozy, which came just hours before French fighter jets were in action over the Libyan skies.
The aircraft will include four fighter bomber F-18s, a tanker aircraft and a patrol plane.
They are expected to arrive later Saturday at a military base in Italy. The frigate, submarine and patrol aircraft are to help with enforcing the arms embargo.
'This is about protecting the Libyan people,' said Zapatero.
The Spanish parliament must on Tuesday still approve the deployment, but a large majority seems guaranteed.
