Mappus resigns as CDU Baden-Wuerttemberg leader
Mar 28, 2011, 16:46 GMT
Stuttgart - Stefan Mappus resigned his state leadership of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) in Baden-Wuerttemberg on Monday, a day after losing the state premiership at the polls.
Mappus, 44, arrived in power only one year ago as a blunt defender of strong government, law and order and nuclear power.
A coalition of the Greens and Social Democrats won Sunday's legislative polls in the state, a centre of German industry.
In a written statement, Mappus announced a state conference of the CDU in May and said he would not offer himself for the leadership, but gave no other hint about his future political plans.
Mappus developed a nationwide following among conservatives, who often complain that the CDU's federal leader, Chancellor Angela Merkel, is too centrist. But his blunt style failed to prevent a loss of middle-class votes from the CDU to the Green Party.
