Police bust Spain's top bank robbers gang
Mar 29, 2011, 11:00 GMT
Barcelona - Spanish police have busted the country's most active gang of bank robbers, detaining five people, officials said Tuesday.
The detainees were suspected of robbing about 50 banks between 2005 and October 2010, when they shot dead a bank cashier in the eastern locality of Cambrils.
After that, the gang stopped its activities for fear of being pursued by the police, Catalan regional Interior Minister Felip Puig said.
The five, all Spanish citizens, operated across the country, according to police sources. They entered banks armed and wearing disguises such as wigs and fake beards.
The arrests were made in northern Cantabria and Basque regions. Two suspected members of the same gang are already in prison for other crimes, while another is still at large.
It was not immediately known how much money the suspects had netted from their robberies.
