UN court rejects Georgian accusations against Russia
Apr 1, 2011, 12:56 GMT
The Hague - The International Court of Justice (ICJ) on Friday said it had no jurisdiction over a case involving accusations of ethnic cleansing and discrimination by Georgia against Russia.
The accusations relate to the five-day war the two countries fought three years ago.
The court in The Hague said it had no jurisdiction in the case because the parties had not attempted to find a solution by negotiation beforehand.
The Georgian government had accused Russia of ethnic cleansing and discrimination against non-Russians by soldiers and militias during the war over the Georgian break-away provinces of Abkhazia and South Ossetia in summer 2008.
Observers see the ruling as a victory for Russia.
