Vienna - Austria's centre-right People's Party (OeVP) chose Foreign Minister Michael Spindelegger on Thursday to succeed Josef Proell as vice chancellor and party chairman.
Proell stepped down from all political posts a day earlier for health reasons. He was also finance minister.
Spindelegger, 51, would retain his post as foreign minister, Austrian Press Agency APA reported.
Spindelegger's election was expected to trigger a cabinet reshuffle in the ranks of the OeVP, which is the junior coalition partner to the Social Democratic Party (SPOe).
