WWII bomb find forces 12,000 from homes in central Germany
Apr 26, 2011, 18:59 GMT
Goettingen, Germany - About 12,000 people were forced to evacuate their homes in the central German city of Goettingen Tuesday night after the discovery of a British World War II-era bomb during construction work.
The news came as a surprise to city residents, who were urged to take shelters in schools and the local university. Police were going door to door Tuesday night, telling people they had to leave for their own safety.
Police had set up a 1,000-metre security zone around the bomb, which was discovered near the site where three bomb experts were killed and six others injured last year during an attempt at a controlled detonation of another World War II bomb.
