US director Darren Aronofsky to head Venice Film Festival jury
Apr 27, 2011, 16:12 GMT
Venice, Italy - Oscar-nominated US director Darren Aronofsky will head the jury at this year's Venice Film Festival, organizers announced Wednesday.
The festival, which was launched in 1932 and is the world's oldest film competition, runs from August 31 to September 10 this year.
Aronfsky's Black Swan opened last year's edition of the festival. In 2008 his film, The Wrestler, won the Golden Lion top award.
Festival organizers noted how the 42-year-old Aronofsky has in his films combined 'the pulp universes of melodrama and horror with a totally original and sophisticated artistic vision.'
Natalie Portman's portrayal of a troubled ballerina in Black Swan won her the 2010 Oscar for best actress while the film received five Academy Award nominations, including best director and best picture.
