Serbian Cup finalists face sanctions after walk-out
May 12, 2011, 15:32 GMT
Belgrade - The Serbian Football Association (FSS) is set to take action against Vojvodina Novi Sad following Wednesday's interrupted national cup final.
Partizan Belgrade were leading 2-1 when Vojvodina Novi Sad walked off the pitch in the 83rd minute in protest at the refereeing.
Partizan, who has dominated Serbian football over the past decade, took the lead, Vojvodina equalized in the 63rd and the Belgrade side took another lead off a penalty in the 72nd minute.
Vojvodina players abandoned the match after referees disallowed their goal because of a foul in the box in the 80th and did not call a penalty in their favour in the 83rd minute.
The FSS said it had launched disciplinary measures against the delegates at the match, referees and the Vojvodina players, coaching staff and management.
The FSS said on its website (www.fss.rs) that 'this urgent and broad action ... will contribute to the swift uncovering of the instigators of the incident.'
The scandal is the latest in a series that has marred Serbian football.
Players, coaches and management of several clubs have raised the question of regularity of the Serbian league, alleging murky interests reflected in refereeing and schedules.
There is also a persistent problem of hooligan groups, as well as legal proceedings and allegations of embezzlement, including those against the former football great, Dragan Dzajic, worth tens of millions of dollars, from player transfers.
