Thousands of commuters stranded by Berlin train outage

Berlin - Tens of thousands of commuters were stranded in Berlin early Monday, as a power outage brought regional rail services to a halt.
A cable fire at an interchange station in the east of the city blocked commuter trains and long-distance transport, at the same time as the network was hampered by a regional rail strike.
Berlin's commuter network was struck by a similar cable fire in November, after an arson attack by left-wing radicals. Police were investigating whether Monday's incident was also criminally motivated.
Berlin's rail network has been hampered by problems in recent years, and commuters face frequent delays due to maintenance work and security checks on carriages which have reduced the number of trains in operation.
