Romania boycotts summit with Obama over Kosovo
May 25, 2011, 15:51 GMT
Bucharest - Romania will skip a regional summit in Warsaw this week, despite the attendance of US President Barack Obama, because Kosovo has been invited to the event, President Traian Basescu's cabinet confirmed Wednesday.
Romania and three other European Union countries - Slovakia, Cyprus and Greece - do not recognize Kosovo. The former Serbian province declared independence in 2008.
Serbia announced Tuesday that President Boris Tadic would not attend the conference, which brings together heads of state from Central and Eastern European countries.
Slovakia said that a protocol arrangement with the organizers enabled President Ivan Gasparovic to participate.
Despite its policy of boycotting forums at which Kosovo participates as a full-fledged state, Serbia bowed to Western pressure in March and is now engaged in EU-sponsored talks aimed at resolving real-life problems stemming from the secession.
