Eighty evacuated as wildfire rages on Spanish island of Ibiza
May 26, 2011, 10:15 GMT
Palma de Majorca, Spain - Eighty people were evacuated from the Spanish holiday island of Ibiza after a wildfire razed about 1,000 hectares of vegetation, officials said Thursday.
A 51-year-old man was arrested on charges of accidentally causing the fire when using a beekeeper's smoker.
The flames spread rapidly because of the lush vegetation, high temperatures and low humidity in Serra de Morna in the east of the island.
About 300 firefighters and soldiers were battling the blaze, which erupted on Wednesday. Defence Minister Carme Chacon promised to send 50 more soldiers as she prepared to visit Ibiza to assess the situation.
