Two hundred evacuated as wildfire rages on Ibiza
May 26, 2011, 13:32 GMT
Palma de Majorca, Spain - About 200 people were evacuated from their homes on the Spanish holiday island of Ibiza after a wildfire razed 1,500 hectares of pine forest, officials said Thursday.
The wildfire, which was the biggest ever recorded on Ibiza, was spreading rapidly in Serra de Morna in the east of the island. It caused no injuries or material damage so far, the sources said.
A 51-year-old man was arrested on charges of accidentally sparking the blaze when using a beekeeper's smoker.
The lush vegetation, high temperature, low humidity and wind propagated the fire after it erupted on Wednesday.
About 300 firefighters and soldiers were battling the flames with the help of helicopters and aircraft.
