Spain arrests three in cyberattacks targetting Sony, others

Jun 10, 2011, 14:07 GMT

Madrid - Spanish police have arrested three people in connection with cyberattacks against the Japanese electronics company Sony, other companies and governments around the world, police reported Friday.

The three are computer experts who specialize in breaching security systems. They belong to an international hacking network known as Anonymous, police alleged.

The main suspect was a 31-year-old merchant seaman who allegedly operated from his flat in the northern port city of Gijon.

The hackers attacked Sony's Playstation online game store, Spain's BBVA bank and the Italian energy company Enel, websites of the Spanish parliament and of the trade union UGT, police said.

They also targeted the governments of Algeria, Libya, Iran, Chile, Colombia and New Zealand.

Police did not give details on the suspects' attacks against Sony. Hackers targeted the company in mid-April, stealing data of tens of millions of user accounts.
