Sweden's Princess Victoria celebrates first wedding anniversary
Jun 19, 2011, 8:15 GMT
Stockholm - Swedish Crown Princess Victoria and her husband Prince Daniel on Sunday celebrated their first wedding anniversary and thanked people for the many well wishes they have received during the year.
The pair were to celebrate the anniversary in private at their home at Haga Palace on the outskirts of Stockholm, palace spokesman Bertil Ternert told the Aftonbladet daily.
A year ago, an estimated 500,000 people lined the streets of the capital to catch a glimpse of the couple pass by in an open-topped carriage after they tied the knot in Stockholm Cathedral.
The couple met in 2002 when Daniel Westling was Victoria's fitness trainer. They were engaged in February 2009.
After the wedding, Westling was given an official title and is now known as Prince Daniel, Duke of Vastergotland.
Sunday is also the wedding anniversary of Victoria's parents, King Carl Gustaf and Queen Silvia who married on June 19, 1976.
During the past year, the crown princess and Prince Daniel have attended about 200 official engagements together and visited France and Germany.
Prince Daniel has also focused on health-related issues and on Saturday opened the so-called World Transplant Games in Gothenburg, western Sweden.
The event, staged for the 18th time, aims to highlight the benefits of organ transplantation and the constant need for donors.
The prince underwent a successful kidney transplant two years ago, something he touched on in his remarks at the games.
