Most-wanted Croatian World War II war crime suspect dies in Austria
Jun 20, 2011, 10:31 GMT
Vienna - One of the most-wanted suspected Nazi war criminals, who had lived undetected for decades, died last week in a provincial Austrian city, it was disclosed Monday.
Milivoj Asner, 98, a former police chief under the Nazi puppet regime in Croatia, had been found incompetent to stand trial after he fled to Austria from Croatia in 2004.
He died on June 14 in a home for the elderly in Klagenfurt in south-central Austria, the home's director told the German Press Agency dpa.
Asner was believed responsible for the persecution and deportation of hundreds of Serbs, Jews and Gypsies. He was on the Simon Wiesenthal Center's list of the 10 most-wanted war criminals.
Croatia requested his extradition in 2005, but an Austrian court found him unfit to stand trial because of dementia.
