Berlin - Pope Benedict XVI has appointed Rainer Maria Woelki, 55, as the new archbishop of Berlin following the death of Cardinal Georg Sterzinsky earlier this week, Catholic officials in the German capital said Saturday.
Woelki is currently auxiliary bishop of Cologne responsible for Catholic welfare agencies and ecumenical relations. He joins six other archbishops of the Catholic Church in Germany.
The archdiocese of Berlin, which covers parishes with 400,000 church members, is to welcome the pope on a visit in September.
