Nine Germans sentenced in Italian World War II massacre
Jul 6, 2011, 20:52 GMT
Rome - Nine Germans were sentenced late Wednesday by an Italian military court in Verona to life in prison for their role in a World War II massacre that left around 400 civilians dead in northern Italy.
Three other accused former Wehrmacht soldiers died during the proceedings, Italian media reported. All are now in their late 80s or 90s.
The men were tried in absentia as part of a six-year inquiry into the killings in the Tuscany and Emilia-Romagna regions.
Germany refuses to hand over perpetrators from the Nazi-era for trial without its agreement.
