Portuguese Socialists elect new head to replace Jose Socrates
Jul 24, 2011, 11:50 GMT
Lisbon - Portugal's Socialist Party elected a new head on Sunday to replace Jose Socrates, the former prime minister who resigned as head of the party after losing the June elections in the train of the economic crisis the country is facing.
Antonio Jose Seguro, 49, gained 68 per cent of the votes, beating Francisco Assis into second place, the party reported after a two-day meeting that ended on Saturday.
Seguro said he would support social justice in leading the party as a 'constructive, responsible and loyal opposition' in parliament.
The European Union and the International Monetary Fund have imposed a stringent austerity package on the country in exchange for a financial aid package.
