Poland increases subsidy for Jewish museum
Sep 19, 2011, 15:58 GMT
Warsaw - Poland will give a subsidy of 10 million zloty (3.1 million dollars) next year to help build a Museum of the History of Polish Jews, to be opened in 2013, Culture Minister Bogdan Zdrojewski said Monday.
The City of Warsaw and the Culture Ministry will each, in 2012, give about 4 to 5 million zloty for the project, which is set to chronicle Jewish culture and life in multimedia exhibits. They have previously given subsidies of about 1.2 million zloty each.
The history of Jews in Poland dates back over a millennium. Most of the 3.5 million population were killed during the Nazi occupation of Poland during World War II.
The museum was set to open on April 19, 2013, on the 70th anniversary of the Warsaw Ghetto uprising against the Nazis.
