Paris squat blaze kills six
Sep 28, 2011, 15:06 GMT
Paris - Six people died on Wednesday in a fire in a Paris squat, French media reported.
A further four people were hospitalized with injuries after fire ripped through the two-storey building in the eastern Seine-Saint-Denis district, forcing some people to jump out of windows to safety, Le Parisien daily reported. Four of the victims burned to death, two died of asphyxiation.
The cause of the fire was believed to be accidental.
One of the survivors said the victims were probably Tunisian and Egyptian migrants, aged in their twenties and thirties.
The mayor of Seine-Saint-Denis, Bertrand Kern, called it a 'human misery drama.'
Kern told Le Parisien the occupants of the building were mostly Tunisian and Libyan illegal migrants.
