Oct 2, 2011, 13:35 GMT
Bonn, Germany - Four suspected Islamist extremists have been arrested in Germany on suspicion of planning terrorist attacks, local radio broadcaster SWR reported Sunday, citing a police spokesman.
The four German-born men, three from the former German capital Bonn and one from the town of Offenbach near Frankfurt am Main, were arrested Saturday afternoon.
According to the initial reports, the men - aged between 22 and 27 - were attempting to acquire illegal weapons.
However, no weapons or dangerous objects were found in a search of their homes.
According to the report, the suspect arrested in Offenbach was released for lack of evidence, while the other three remain in custody pending further investigation.
Police would not state whether the suspected attack involved Monday's planned German unification day celebrations in Bonn, at which hundreds of thousands of people, including German Chancellor Angela Merkel and President Christian Wulff, are expected.
