Poland gets back two paintings looted by Nazis

Oct 4, 2011, 14:58 GMT

Warsaw - Two paintings by a leading Polish impressionist returned to Warsaw Tuesday, some 67 years after they were looted by Nazi soldiers during World War II.

The paintings by 19th century Polish artist Julian Falat will be put on display by May 2012 after they undergo needed conservation work and after ongoing renovation is completed at the National Museum in Warsaw, director Agnieszka Morawinska said Tuesday.

The paintings - Off to the Hunt and The Hunt - depict snowy hunting scenes in panoramic views, and were likely stolen in 1944 when Nazis looted the museum in the final year of the war.

The paintings were discovered in 2006 when they were put up on auction in New York. Polish officials asked the US to withdraw the paintings and investigate their origins. A New York court ruled in August that they should be returned to Poland.

Culture Minister Bogdan Zdrojewski praised the cooperation between Polish and American officials in getting the paintings back to Warsaw.
