Captain missing after freighter sinks off western Norway
Oct 8, 2011, 8:38 GMT
Oslo - A search operation was ongoing Saturday for the missing captain of a freighter that sank overnight off western Norway, rescue services said.
The 48-metre Finnoy Glimt reported problems late Friday and sank 'very quickly,' Johan Mannsaker of the Joint Rescue Coordination Centre in Stavanger told dpa.
The two other crew members were rescued from the waters near the town of Haugesund. All three were Polish nationals, Mannsaker said.
Coastguard vessels and a helicopter were taking part in the search. Patrols were also combing the shoreline.
The Finnoy Glimt was transporting gravel and there was little risk of an oil spill but the coastguard was on standby, the spokesman said.
