Report: IGF-1 doping test developed by Cologne scientists
Oct 10, 2011, 12:01 GMT
Cologne, Germany - German scientists have developed a test for the IGF-1 (Insulin-like growth factor 1) drug which is ready for use after approval by the World Anti-Doping Agency, Deutschlandfunk radio reported on Monday.
The report said that scientists in Cologne had developed the test but that it was so far only possible to trace the synthetic analog of the drug, and not doping with IGF-1 produced in the body.
Scientist Mario Thevis spoke of 'a big step in the right direction but no final solution.'
IGF-1 appears to be a popular doping substance among bodybuilders and in high performance sport because of its anabolic effects.
