Two Russian soldiers shot dead in Caucasus
Oct 25, 2011, 15:36 GMT
Moscow - Two Russian soldiers were shot dead on Tuesday in a suspected insurgent attack in the volatile Caucasus region, the Interfax news agency reported.
The victims had been members of an infantry unit deployed to the Republic of Chechnya, one of the centres of long-running, and mostly Muslim, resistance to Russian rule.
The soldiers had been standing watch at a guard post on a road in a rural region. A superior officer found the pair dead from gunshot wounds.
Russian infantry units were sweeping the heavily forested vicinity for possible suspects in the attack.
Fighting between Russian army units and rebels takes place frequently in the Caucasus, with government forces conducting patrols and house raids conducted almost daily.
Insurgents in past years have rarely attacked army units, usually preferring to use bombs or road ambushes to murder officials cooperating with Russian forces.
