11 arrested in Bulgaria after seizure of 75 kilos of heroin
Nov 1, 2011, 14:41 GMT
Sofia - Bulgarian police arrested 11 people and seized 75 kilos of heroin in a raid on a drug-smuggling gang, the interior ministry in Sofia said Tuesday.
The gang was allegedly transporting the heroin from Turkey to Western Europe in two cars. One of the two cars was stopped at the border toward its northern neighbour Romania.
Bulgaria joined the European Union in 2007 along with Romania, and became the entry point to the bloc for much of the heroin brought in from the Middle East.
Customs officers frequently seize large shipments of drugs hidden in cars and trucks, mostly inbound from Turkey and attempting to reach the West via Romania or Serbia.
Earlier Tuesday Bulgarian authorities incinerated 526 kilos of seized narcotics, with an estimated street value of 22 million euros (31 million dollars).
Over the previous 11 years, the Balkan country destroyed 28 tonnes of various drugs.
