Eleven injured as staircase collapses at Polish disco
Nov 6, 2011, 10:43 GMT
Warsaw - A staircase collapsed at a nightclub in southern Poland injuring 11 people, police said Sunday.
There were about 2,000 people at the nightclub in Krakow at the time. The evacuation of the building that houses four nightclubs and discotheques lasted through early Sunday.
The cause of the collapse was not immediately known, and police were investigating.
Broadcaster TVN 24 reported on Sunday that residents and local media had previously warned that the building was dilapidated. One former nightclub employee said the building was intended for demolition.
A witness said there had been many people on the staircase.
'An escape route had to be organized for us through some kitchen and a hall. I don't know what would have happened if there had been a fire,' the witness added.
