Suspected terrorist charged with supporting al-Qaeda
Nov 10, 2011, 23:22 GMT
Washington - A terrorism suspect currently in German custody was charged by US authorities Thursday with conspiring to provide support to al-Qaeda, the Justice Department said.
Abdeladim El-Kebir, 30, also known as Abi al-Barra, was arrested in April in Germany.
Between November 2009 and April 2011, he conspired with others to provide training, personnel and explosives to the terrorist group, the indictment in a New York federal court said.
When el-Kebir and two other men were arrested in April, Germany authorities said they were planning to trigger an explosive device laced with metal shards in a crowd of people.
The then-29-year-old Moroccan allegedly travelled to an al-Qaeda training camp last year in the Afghan-Pakistani border region, where German investigators said he was chosen by the terrorist network to launch an attack in Germany.
