Nov 22, 2011, 10:47 GMT
Belgrade - Serbian police stopped 12 illegal migrants at the border with Macedonia on Tuesday, the customs authorities said in Belgrade.
The migrants from Afghanistan and Somalia were hidden in a truck registered in Macedonia. According to the statement, Serbian customs officers stopped 45 migrants on attempted entry.
Separately, radio B92 said that police launched a nationwide raid on gangs involved in human trafficking along Serbian borders.
Quoting a police official, it said at least 14 arrests were made in at least six cities, in an operation coordinated with police in Hungary and Austria.
Located centrally in the Balkans, bordering European Union states but itself not a part of the bloc, Serbia straddles major smuggling routes between Europe and the Middle East.
