Italian judge, politician, among those arrested in anti-mafia sweep

Rome - A judge, a regional politician and a police officer were among a group of 10 suspects arrested by Italian police on Wednesday in an anti-mafia operation in the southern region of Calabria. The detained face charges including corruption and criminal association linked with the activities of the Calabrian version of the mafia, the 'Ndrangheta, judicial authorities in Milan who issued the arrest warrants, said. The magistrate who was taken into custody in the early morning sweep was identified in news reports as Giuseppe Vincenzo Giglio, a judicial official in Reggio Calabria. As head of an anti-mafia unit in the southern Italian city which is situated in 'Ndrangheta's heartland, Giglio had been responsible in the past for ordering the confiscation of assets from convicted mobsters. Also detained in the operation, was Calabria Regional Councillor Giuseppe Morelli, a member of former Italian prime minister Silvio Berlusconi's conservative People of Freedom party, and Luigi Mongelli, a senior tax police officer. Less well known than Sicily's Cosa Nostra or the Neapolitan Camorra, the 'Ndrangheta has in recent years expanded its criminal activities, such as drug-trafficking and extortion, beyond Italy's borders, including Germany, Australia and Canada.
