Dutchman arrested trying to take revenge on Spanish flag
Dec 2, 2011, 13:06 GMT
Madrid - A Dutch football fan has been arrested in the Spanish city of Granada for allegedly trying to take revenge on a Spanish flag for the Netherlands' defeat in the 2010 World Cup final.
Granada local police said on Friday that, earlier in the day, a Dutchman aged 25, was arrested whilst attempting to climb a flagpole in the city centre and pull down the Spanish flag.
According to the police, the Dutchman said his motive was to 'take revenge for Spain having robbed the Netherlands of victory in the World Cup final.' He will now have to appear before a local court.
Spain beat the Netherlands 1-0 in the 2010 final in Johannesburg. The Dutch players and fans complained that Andres Iniesta's winning goal was facilitated by a serious mistake by English referee Howard Webb, who should have awarded the Dutch a corner.
