No agreement with Russia on missile shield, NATO chief says
Dec 8, 2011, 10:28 GMT
Brussels - NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen said Thursday that common ground had not yet been found with Russia on a proposed missile defence shield which has raised the spectre of a fresh arms race in Europe.
'On missile defence, we don't agree yet,' he told reporters after a meeting of NATO foreign ministers with their Russian counterpart, Sergei Lavrov. 'But we all agree that it is important to keep on trying, to keep on talking, to keep on listening.'
Rasmussen insisted once again that the shield was not aimed at Russia, despite Moscow's concerns to the contrary.
He also said he remained optimistic that a political agreement with Russia could still be reached in time for a NATO summit in Chicago in May, to coincide with the declaration of the 'interim operational capacity' of the shield.
