Serbian police goes on strike for better wages
Dec 12, 2011, 12:16 GMT
Belgrade - A part of the Serbian police force went on strike Monday, for the third time year, demanding better pay and work conditions.
One of the leading police unions, the Independent Trade Union of Police, said the strikers were performing the legally required minimum of duties during the stoppage.
It was not immediately clear how many police officers had joined the strike.
The industrial action could produce long lines at border crossings, where officers were at work but performing duties intentionally slowly, as well as further increasing the long waiting times for documents.
The union decided to go on strike after talks failed with the government on a wage hike, backlog payments and collective labour contract violations.
A part of the police force went on strike in June and October, while another strike was only just averted in February.
