Reports: Simeone to become Atletico Madrid coach
Dec 21, 2011, 10:15 GMT
Madrid - Diego Simeone is set to take over as coach at troubled Atletico Madrid, according to Spanish media reports on Wednesday.
Atletico - who are in disappointing 10th place in La Liga - are apparently about to sack coach Gregorio Manzano and bring in Simeone.
Simeone, 41, was a popular, combatative midfielder for Atletico from 1994 to 1997, and from 2003 to 2005. He was a key part of the league-and-cup-double winning team of 1996.
He has coached Racing, Estudiantes and River Plate in his native Argentina, and Catania in Italy.
On Tuesday he resigned as coach of Racing, giving rise to speculation that he had been lined up by Atletico to replace Manzano.
According to the website of AS on Wednesday, Simeone's assistant at Atletico will be fellow Argentine German Burgos, 42, who was Atletico goalkeeper from 2001 to 2004.
