Support for EU drops in Serbia
Dec 22, 2011, 9:13 GMT
Belgrade - Opposition to European Union membership has risen to above 50 per cent in Serbia following a a spat with the West over its former province, Kosovo, polls published on Thursday showed.
If a referendum on EU membership were to be held now, 52 per cent of voters would say 'no,' according to a survey published by the Belgrade daily Press.
Support for the EU has dropped after Brussels said on December 9 that Serbia must come to terms with the loss of Kosovo if it wants to join the club.
Three-quarters of those polled said they expected the EU to set recognition of Kosovo as a condition for Serbia's membership - an eventuality that would increase opposition to the EU to 59 per cent.
The EU is next due to consider Serbia's membership application in March. The outcome of those discussions is expected to feature prominently in elections due to take place in the second quarter of 2012.
