EU doles out 700 million euros for Millennium Development Goals

Dec 22, 2011, 10:32 GMT

Brussels - Poor countries in Africa, the Caribbean and the Pacific region are to receive a total of 700 million euros (912 million dollars) from the European Union, the bloc's executive announced on Wednesday.

The money comes from a 1-billion-euro (1.3-billion-dollar) pot that European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso pledged in September 2010 to support the Millennium Development Goals (MDG), a set of United Nations development targets that expire in 2015.

Funds have been earmarked for projects in 36 countries 'which aim at accelerating progress on the most off-track MDGs: eradicating hunger; improving maternal health; curbing child mortality; and improving access to water and sanitation,' the commission said in a statement.

The largest amounts of money were directed to Mozambique (67.3 million euros); Ghana (52 million euros); and Tanzania (51.5 million euros).

The remaining 300 million euros from the EU's fund will be distributed at a later stage to reward the countries which make the best progress towards the MDGs, the commission said.
