Madrid - The world's biggest lottery on Thursday showered prizes worth 2.5 billion euros (3.3 billion dollars) on Spaniards, with the jackpot of 4 million euros going to the number 58268.
The number had been printed on 180 tickets, meaning that the jackpot - known as El Gordo (The Fat One) - will be paid out 180 times.
Many Spaniards had pinned their hopes on the Christmas lottery after being hit by the country's worst economic crisis in decades.
The lottery is also known in other European countries and as far as Asia, where people buy tickets over the internet.
The Spanish Christmas lottery is not only the world's biggest, but also oldest. In its current form, the lottery marks its 200th anniversary in the coming year.
