Berlin - Former Germany assistant coach Michael Skibbe has been appointed Hertha Berlin coach in succession of Markus Babbel, the Bundesliga club confirmed on Thursday.
Skibbe will sign a contract until 2014 in a move from Turkish club Eskisehrspor, for which according to news reports Hertha had to pay 250,000 euros (326,000 dollars).
'Hertha have played a solid first half of the season. Staying in the top flight is very possible,' said Skibbe at the official presentation.
Promoted Hertha rank 11th in the Bundesliga, four points above the danger zone, and have reached the quarter-finals of the German cup.
Skibbe was Germany assistant coach under Rudi Voeller from 2000 until 2004. He has coached in the Bundesliga at Bayer Leverkusen, Borussia Dortmund and Eintracht Frankfurt.
Babbel, who led Hertha back into the top flight in summer, was sacked on Sunday following a rift with club officials. The club said on Thursday that the differences have now been settled.
