Atletico Madrid announce Simeone as new coach
Dec 23, 2011, 14:46 GMT
Madrid - Struggling Spanish giants Atletico Madrid announced on Friday, as expected, the appointment of Diego Simeone as new coach.
Simeone takes over from Gregorio Manzano, who was sacked on Thursday due to elimination from the King's Cup and a disappointing 10th place in La Liga.
He will be presented by Atletico to the media next Tuesday.
Simeone, 41, was a popular, all-action midfielder when Atletico pulled off a league and cup double in 1996. He has previously been coach at Racing, Estudiantes and River Plate in his native Argentine, and at Catania in Italy.
