Russia launches six US communication satellites into space
Dec 28, 2011, 18:05 GMT
Moscow - Russia on Wednesday launched six satellites for the US communication system Globalstar into space, the news agency Interfax reported, quoting space agency Roskosmos.
The Soyuz booster rocket carrying the satellites was launched from the Baikonour space launch facility in Kazakhstan and was the last Russian launch in 2011.
It came just days after the 50-million-euro Russian Meridian communication satellite, likewise carried by a Soyuz booster, crashed back to earth after launch.
First operational in the 1960s and repeatedly modernized, the Soyuz booster is a workhorse rocket for Russia's space programme.
A Soyuz booster crashed shortly after launch in August, destroying a communications satellite.
