Rome - Police in Italy have detained a German woman in connection with the stabbing of her husband, the son of the late Italian opera tenor Mario Del Monaco, near Venice, media reported Thursday.
Claudio Del Monaco, 64, was in critical condition in a Treviso hospital following multiple stab wounds he received on Wednesday, the newspaper La Tribuna di Treviso reported. Del Monaco had to undergo emergency heart surgery, it said.
Del Monaco's wife, identified in some media reports as 35-year-old opera singer Daniela Werner, in others as Daniela Hermann, was taken into custody after she was found wandering in a 'state of confusion' in a street in the northeastern seaside resort of Jesolo.
The woman was suffering from an injury to her chest - also believed to be a stab wound - and had to be hospitalized, La Tribuna reported.
Claudio, a theatre producer, is the son of Mario Del Monaco who is widely regarded as one of the greatest dramatic tenors of the 20th century. Del Monaco died in 1982.
