Italian couple call it quits after 77 years of marriage
Dec 30, 2011, 14:51 GMT
Rome - A 99-year-old Italian man and his 96-year-old wife have decided to file for divorce, after a marriage lasting more than seven decades that produced five children and more than a dozen grandchildren, media in Italy reported.
The rift is rooted in the 2002 discovery of illicit love letters indicating that the woman had an extramarital affair, the Milan-based newspaper Il Giorno reported this week.
After finding the letters hidden in a drawer, the man, a retired carabinieri police officer, left the house he had shared with his wife in Rome.
Attempts at reconciliation, including the couple living together again, ultimately failed and lawyers were instructed to intiate divorce proceedings this month, Il Giorno reported.
The two wed in 1934 in Naples and moved to Rome in 1955.
