Three Russians die when car crashes through ice on Siberian lake
Jan 2, 2012, 9:58 GMT
Moscow - Three Russians died as they drove across Siberia's frozen Lake Baikal, as the ice was too thin to carry the weight of their car, Interfax news agency reported Monday.
A woman, 37, and an eight-year-old child both survived the plunge into the icy water, the regional civil defence authority told Interfax.
Roads are prepared across the frozen ice in winter, but they are only authorized once the ice reaches a thickness of 70 centimetres. Nevertheless, surface cracks and pack ice make the journey across the frozen lake risky.
