Vienna ice cream murder suspect gives birth to son in jail
Jan 11, 2012, 17:37 GMT
Vienna - A woman accused of having shot two lovers and hidden them under her ice cream parlour gave birth to a son early Wednesday in a Viennese prison hospital, reported the APA news agency, citing prison officials.
The Spanish-Mexican woman was arrested after fleeing to Italy last year following the discovery in June of the bodies of her former husband and former boyfriend.
They had been shot and were found covered in concrete in the cellar of the Viennese house where she operated an ice cream parlour.
Austrian authorities said the woman told Italian police that she shot the men after they had mistreated her. They had been killed in 2008 and 2010.
The birth had been expected in late January. However, there were no complications reported, with officials moving her to a hospital wing as soon as she went into labour.
A prison official said both mother and son were healthy.
Juvenile authorities are expected to give custody of the child to the 47-year-old father, as 'there is a more stable situation and a long-term parent figure available.'
It is not clear for how long the woman will remain incarcerated. She and the father are planning a jailhouse wedding.
