Van Rompuy rules out change of date for January 30 EU summit
Jan 13, 2012, 18:05 GMT
Brussels - The European Union summit that had been called for January 30 in Brussels will go ahead on that date despite a concurrent Belgian general strike, EU President Herman Van Rompuy said Friday.
In recent days, several officials - including Italian Prime Minister Mario Monti and his Danish counterpart Helle Thorning-Schmidt - had suggested a change of date to January 29 to avoid the disruption that the strike is likely to cause.
At the meeting, leaders are expected to discuss a new budget discipline pact for the eurozone and other EU nations that are willing to join it; a second bailout for Greece; the situation in Italy and Spain; and measures to boost the bloc's ailing economy.
