Veteran Abidal extends contract at Barcelona
Jan 16, 2012, 22:09 GMT
Madrid - World champions Barcelona said Monday that the contract of veteran French left-back Eric Abidal had been extended for one year until June 2013.
From then on, there will be the option to extend the contract season by season until 2015.
Abidal, 32, joined Barca from French giants Lyon in 2007. He has helped the Catalans to win two Club World Cups, two Champions Leagues and three Spanish Ligas.
He became a firm favourite of the Barca fans in the spring of 2011, when he quickly recovered from an emergency operation to remove a tumour on his liver in time to play in the Champions League final victory against Manchester United.
He has scored only one goal in 177 games for the Catalans, though he has created many scores with his powerful surges down the left.
Barca are expected to shortly announce that coach Pep Guardiola will continue for one more season until June 2013.
